The Abduction of Europa sculpture

The Abduction of Europa sculpture in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, is a striking modern artwork that brings ancient mythology to life. Created by artists Nikos and Pantelis Sotiriades under the guidance of film director Nikos Koundouros, the sculpture depicts the moment when Zeus, in the form of a bull, carries Europa across the sea. Made of bronze, steel, and glass, the piece stands at the harbor and weighs nearly six tonnes. Its dramatic composition captures the motion and emotion of the myth, serving as both a cultural landmark and a powerful reminder of Crete’s rich mythological heritage.
