Description
The Talaia Mountains (often referred to as Kouloukonas or the Talaia Ori) are a rugged mountain range in the Rethymno region of Crete, forming part of the Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geopark. Named after the mythical bronze giant Talos, who was said to reside on its peaks, the range features notable summits such as Koutsotroulis (1,084 m) and Kouloukonas/Timios Stavros (1,076 m). The area is celebrated for its dramatic limestone landscape, which includes significant geological and cultural sites like the Sfentoni and Melidoni caves, as well as the historic Vossakos Monastery. Its slopes are characterized by a unique ecosystem, home to the fragrant ladanos plant and providing a scenic, tranquil backdrop to coastal settlements like Bali.
