The Samaria Gorge is one of the longest and most famous gorges in Europe, stretching about 16 kilometers through the White Mountains of Crete. It is part of the Samaria National Park and is known for its dramatic cliffs, narrow passages like the “Iron Gates,” and rich biodiversity. The gorge is a popular hiking destination, attracting thousands of visitors each year who walk from the Omalos plateau down to the Libyan Sea. It is also home to rare species such as the Cretan wild goat (kri-kri) and many endemic plants.
