Sabbionara Rampart

The Sabbionara Rampart (Italian Sabionera = “sand”) is the only surviving gate of the outer Venetian defensive wall built around Chania in the late 1500s. It was historically a major entrance (Porta Sabbionara) leading toward a sandy shore that once lay outside the walls, later renamed Koum Kapisi (“Gate of Sand”) during Ottoman rule. The structure includes part of the adjacent rampart and bastion with decorative elements such as the Lion of Saint Mark’s emblem. Today it serves as a cultural exhibition venue run by the Municipality of Chania and stands as a reminder of the city’s layered Venetian and Ottoman past.
