Description
Rodopos Peninsula is a wild, sparsely populated headland on Crete’s northwest coast, characterized by rocky terrain, dry hills, and exposed cliffs. Its natural vegetation is mainly low Mediterranean scrub (phrygana), including aromatic herbs like thyme and sage that support insects and pollinators. The steep coastal cliffs provide nesting and resting sites for seabirds, especially gulls and cormorants, which take advantage of the relatively undisturbed environment. Inland, the rugged landscape offers shelter for small mammals and reptiles adapted to dry, rocky conditions. The surrounding sea is clear and relatively unpolluted, supporting a variety of fish and marine invertebrates close to shore.
