Description
After the completion of the Potami Dam, more animals and birds have appeared in the municipality of Amari. The dam is located in a beautiful area – north of the settlement of Woleones and the Patsos Gorge – surrounded by greenery, and was built to supply irrigation water to the city of Rethymno and the nearby areas.
The landscape has changed significantly, as the small valley of Patsos now contains a lake and wetlands, ideal for recreational activities. A considerable population of birds spends the winter here, including endangered species such as the marbled duck, while the reservoir stores a significant amount of water.
Following the completion of the Potami Dam, the conditions were created to attract even more animals and birds. It lies in a beautiful place, in a green valley, and was built to improve irrigation in the region around the city of Rethymno. The landscape changed after the dam was constructed at the site north of the settlement of Woleones and its gorge… Today, the lake has already become an artificial biotope, very interesting and appealing for tourism and recreational activities. Many bird species now overwinter here, including threatened ones such as the marbled duck. The dam also helps save important quantities of water.
