Description
Located within the Psiloritis Geopark—a UNESCO Geological Heritage site—the Platania Gorge is a significant natural landmark in the Amari Valley of Rethymno. This 7-kilometer trail zigzagging through the southwestern foothills of the Psiloritis massif is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, particularly as a vital habitat for rare birds of prey such as Griffon Vultures and the endangered Lammergeier. Hikers can explore a landscape characterized by impressive vertical eroded walls, diverse oak forests, and cultural elements of mainland Crete while ascending from the village of Platania to altitudes of up to 950 meters. Though the path is well-marked and of medium difficulty, it requires roughly 4 to 5 hours to complete and is best suited for those comfortable with heights due to the steep terrain.
