Description
Mount Kedros (also known as Mount Kentros) is a striking limestone mountain in the Rethymno regional unit of central Crete, rising to an elevation of approximately 1,777 meters. Situated southwest of the Psiloritis range, it forms the western boundary of the lush Amari Valley and is often described as having a sharp, conical profile that resembles a volcano from certain angles. As a protected Natura 2000 site, the mountain is a "botanical paradise" home to endemic and rare flora—notably the endangered red Tulipa doerfleri, which carpets the nearby Gious Kampos Plateau in spring—and serves as a critical nesting ground for rare raptors like the bearded vulture and golden eagle. Historically, the "Kedros villages" (such as Gerakari and Krya Vrysi) clinging to its slopes are known for their fierce resistance during World War II, having suffered tragic destruction by German forces in 1944. Today, Mount Kedros is a premier destination for experienced hikers, featuring challenging trails including segments of the European E4 path that offer panoramic views of the Libyan Sea to the south.
