Description
The Monument of the Fallen in Marmaketo is a stone-built memorial located in the village square. It features a rough limestone base topped with a bronze bust of a Cretan man in traditional dress, symbolizing the villagers who fought and died in war. A central plaque bears names and dates, including “ΕΜΜ. ΚΑΖΑΝΗΣ 1943–1946,” marking those who died during World War II and the Greek Civil War. The structure reflects the village’s tribute to its heroes and is surrounded by pine trees and stone houses, creating a quiet, respectful atmosphere rooted in the historical memory of rural Crete.
