Description
Gouverneto Monastery, built between 1537 and 1548, is one of Crete’s oldest monasteries. In 1637 it housed about 60 monks. Construction began under Venetian rule and slowed under Ottoman occupation. During World War II, Germans set up a guard post. Since 2005, parts have been restored by the monks. Smoking and photography are prohibited, and it is closed on Wednesdays and Fridays.
