Description

The Mitropolianos River, locally called Μητροπολιανός Ποταμός, is situated in southern Heraklion, Crete. It flows near the ancient archaeological site of Gortyna and takes its name from the nearby village of Mitropoli. Historically known as the Litheos River, it’s tied to the myth of Zeus's abduction of Europa—said to have taken place at a spring beneath a sacred plane tree near ancient Gortyna. This tree was revered and believed to remain evergreen as a tribute to that myth
