Description
The Lord Christ Church (often called Christos or Christ the Savior) is a small but historically significant Orthodox church located in the village of Komitades, in the Sfakia region of southern Crete. Positioned near the entrance of the Imbros Gorge, the church is closely connected to the area’s long tradition of resistance and local identity. Architecturally, the church reflects the simplicity of rural Cretan chapels: stone construction, a tiled roof, and a peaceful courtyard shaded by trees. Inside, visitors find traditional icons, a carved wooden iconostasis, and devotional offerings that highlight the deep-rooted Orthodox faith of the community. The Lord Christ Church is especially known for its role in local history. During periods of conflict, including the Ottoman era and World War II, Komitades served as a refuge for resistance fighters, and the church became a symbolic gathering point for the villagers. Today, the church remains a serene and meaningful stop for travelers exploring Komitades, the Imbros Gorge, and the wider Sfakia region. Its quiet atmosphere and cultural significance make it a memorable part of any visit to the area.
