Lake Kournas

Lake Kournas, located near the village of Kournas in the Chania region (though frequently visited from neighboring Rethymno), is the only natural freshwater lake on the island of Crete. Situated at the foot of the White Mountains, the lake is renowned for its turquoise, mirror-like waters and rich biodiversity, providing a habitat for terrapins, eels, and various bird species. Visitors can enjoy activities such as pedal boat rentals to explore the shoreline, swimming in the clear water, or dining at traditional tavernas that offer local Cretan specialties like antikristo. According to local lore, the lake was historically known as Koressia and is steeped in mythology, with some legends attributing its creation to the god Poseidon.
