Description
Kotsifou Canyon is a dramatic and narrow gorge located in the southern part of the Rethymno regional unit in Crete, stretching between the villages of Kanevos and Sellia. Formed by the erosion of the Kotsifos River, the canyon is approximately 2 kilometers long and is framed by towering vertical limestone cliffs that reach heights of several hundred meters. A paved road runs through the base of the gorge, making it easily accessible for visitors to experience its rugged beauty, including the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos built directly into a hollow of the rock wall. The canyon serves as a vital natural corridor leading toward the famous beaches of Plakias and is known for its intense wind gusts and diverse Cretan flora.
