Description
Kokkino Pyrgos (Greek: Κόκκινος Πύργος, meaning "Red Tower") is a small seaside village with a modest fishing port located on the southern coast of Crete, near Tympaki in the municipality of Faistos. It lies about 67 km southwest of Heraklion and is the closest seaport to the Messara Plain.
The port serves mainly fishing boats and small vessels and is surrounded by two distinct beaches: one organized and sandy to the east (with tavernas and sunbeds), and a quieter, natural coastline to the west. The area is also known for being a nesting site for Caretta caretta sea turtles, especially around the nearby estuary of the Geropotamos River.
While not a commercial or tourist port, Kokkino Pyrgos offers a peaceful, authentic Cretan coastal experience with local seafood tavernas, low-rise lodging, and a relaxed atmosphere.
