Description
The Katholiko Gorge is one of the most atmospheric hikes on the Akrotiri peninsula in Crete. It starts near the Gouverneto Monastery and follows a rocky, well-worn path down into a dramatic limestone ravine. Along the way, you pass the historic Katholiko Monastery, which is carved into the cliffs and adds a strong sense of history to the landscape.
The hike is generally easy to moderate, though the descent includes uneven stone steps and some steeper sections. At the end of the gorge, the trail opens out to a secluded inlet on the sea, surrounded by steep cliffs. Compared to more forested gorges like Diktamos Gorge, Katholiko is drier and more rugged, with a striking, almost desert-like feel.
