Description

Guora Gate (also known locally as Πύλη Guora, Porta Guora or Megali Porta) is the main surviving Venetian city gate of Rethymno’s historic fortifications. Built between 1566 and 1568 during the rule of Venetian Rector Jacopo Guoro, the arched stone structure once marked the principal entrance to the fortified town and led directly into the Old Town’s main thoroughfare. Although much of the original fortification walls have been lost to later expansion, the gate remains an iconic symbol of Rethymno’s Venetian heritage, with the broken relief of the Lion of Saint Mark preserved nearby in the courtyard of the Loggia
