Description

The Grand Arsenal, located in the atmospheric Old Port of Chania directly opposite the Egyptian Lighthouse, stands as one of the most iconic historic structures in the area. Part of the Venetian shipydard complex founded around 1497, this impressive building began construction in 1585 under the supervision of Alvise Grimani and was completed by 1600. Moreover, during the Ottoman period, a second floor was added, significantly expanding its scale and functionality. Its distinctive stone walls, large arched openings, and intricate shed designs still highlight its architectural importance today.

Today, the Grand Arsenal proudly houses the KAM Center of Mediterranean Architecture (CAM), also known as the Center of Mediterranean Architecture Chania. This vibrant institution serves as a major venue for cultural events, scientific symposiums, political meetings, workshops, and art exhibitions. Consequently, its transformation from a neglected ruin into a respected cultural hub demonstrates how deeply it remains connected to Chania’s heritage and modern cultural identity.
