Description
The Gouverneto Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Our Lady of the Angels, is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete, located on the Akrotiri Peninsula near Chania. Built in the 16th century (around 1537), it resembles a small fortress surrounded by nature, olive trees, and rocky landscapes.
The monastery is still active but has limited visiting access due to its religious character. Visitors are expected to dress respectfully and follow monastery rules. The area is also the starting point for a beautiful hiking trail leading to the historic Katholiko Monastery and a dramatic coastal gorge.
It is a peaceful place ideal for people interested in history, spirituality, architecture, and nature walks.
