Description
The Gonomiou Reservoir (Gonomiou Lake) is an artificial lake located in the Rethymnon prefecture of Crete, Greece. Primarily serving as a water management structure, it is recognized as a local wetland feature in the region. It sits at a relatively high elevation (~900 m above sea level) in the mountainous terrain of central Crete, at the foothills of the Psiloritis (Mount Ida) range near Anogeia. The reservoir is just southeast of the village of Anogeia, which is itself located roughly 36 km southwest of Heraklion and 52 km southeast of Rethymno city. The reservoir was constructed to supply water for drinking and irrigation to the surrounding agricultural lands and the community near Anogeia. It’s a local landmark in the Rethymno region of Crete and sometimes used for community events like the Blessing of the Waters on Epiphany.
