Description
The Gonia Odigitria Monastery, also known as Moni Gonia or Monastery of Our Lady Odigitria, is a historic Orthodox monastery located near Kolymbari on the northwest coast of Crete. It sits at the entrance of the Rodopou Peninsula and overlooks the sea, offering beautiful views of the Cretan coastline.
The monastery was founded in the 17th century and is one of the best-preserved Venetian-era monasteries on the island. It has a strong fortress-like appearance, with thick defensive walls, inner courtyards, and a small museum showcasing religious icons and artifacts.
Today, it remains an active monastery and also serves as an important cultural and historical site for visitors interested in Cretan Orthodox heritage.
