Description
The Geropotamos River is one of the main rivers in the Rethymnon regional unit on the island of Crete, Greece. It flows through a fertile valley with olive groves and agricultural land, playing an important role in local irrigation. The river originates in the inland hills and mountains and flows northwards before emptying into the Cretan Sea near the village of Panormos.
Although it can have a strong flow during the winter months, the Geropotamos often becomes much smaller or partially dry in summer due to Crete’s Mediterranean climate. The surrounding area includes wetlands near the river mouth, which are important for local wildlife and migratory birds.
