Description
The Fortezza is a historic 16th-century Venetian fortress perched on Paleokastro Hill overlooking the northern town of Rethymno and the sea. Built between 1573 and 1580 by the Venetians to protect the city from Ottoman and pirate incursions, it later fell to the Ottomans in 1646.
Today, its robust bastions, walls and remnants of internal buildings stand as a testament to its strategic military past. Visitors can walk the ramparts and enjoy panoramic views of Rethymno’s rooftops, old town, harbor, and the Aegean Sea. Some sections host cultural events like the open-air Theater of Erofili.
