Description
Filippoi is a small traditional village in southern Crete, nestled 50 km south of Heraklion at 240 m above sea level. Quiet and charming, it offers an authentic taste of rural Cretan life, centred around the picturesque church of Timios Prodromos. A moderately challenging hiking trail begins just above the village, winding through olive groves and chapels before descending to the stunning Tsoutsouras beach on the south coast. The village’s history dates back to at least 1583, when it was referred to as “Filippu” or Belvedere, with only 52 inhabitants. Today, Filippoi provides a peaceful retreat for walkers, nature lovers and those seeking serenity away from the crowds. Expect narrow stone-paved lanes, bright-blue shutters, warm hospitality and sweeping views over rolling hills down to the Libyan Sea. It is the ideal spot for an afternoon walk, refreshing swim and embrace of local rhythm.
