Evangelismos Mirtia

Located in the picturesque village of Mirtia, about 15 km south of Heraklion, the Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos—known locally as Evangelismos tis Theotokou—is a charming stone-built chapel adjacent to the village square. According to local tradition, this small basilica was constructed in just forty days, under direction from Ottoman authorities, with its iconostasis (and icons) dating back to 1874, and its bell tower restored in 1917 . The church underwent major renovations between 2003 and 2005, which included enlarging its courtyard for enhanced accessibility .
