Description
Avdou (Αβδού) is a serene, semi‑mountainous village nestled in the lush Lagada valley, at the foothills of Mount Selena in the Hersonissos area of Heraklion. This traditional community, resting at around 230 m above sea level, is immersed in olive groves, vineyards and orchards beside the Aposelemi River. With roots documented as early as Venetian records in 1381 and mythic ties to the prophet Obadiah (Abdiou), the village offers an evocative blend of natural beauty and local tradition. Visitors are treated to peaceful stone‑paved lanes, characteristic Cretan rural architecture and seasonal cultural events organised by the village’s cultural association. Although small, Avdou serves as a gateway to nearby trails, the striking Rozas Gorge, and equestrian or jeep-safari excursions. Ideal for those seeking calm away from mass tourism, it provides a glimpse into authentic inland Crete where history, landscape and local life mingle harmoniously.
