Description
The Askifou Plateau is a high mountain basin located in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of western Crete. Surrounded by steep peaks on all sides, the plateau sits at about 730–750 meters above sea level and forms a natural gateway between the northern and southern parts of the island. The mountain that rises most prominently above the plateau is Kastro (or Fanari), a rugged peak that offers panoramic views over the entire Askifou basin. Its slopes are covered with low shrubs, rocky outcrops, and patches of pine, reflecting the wild character of the Sfakia region. From the summit, you can see the Imbros Gorge, the Libyan Sea, and the surrounding White Mountains. Askifou is known for its traditional villages, old stone houses, and its historical role in Cretan resistance movements. The landscape feels remote and dramatic, with changing light and weather that give the mountains a powerful presence.
