Located 17km east of Heraklion and 3 km south of the Kokkini Hani coastal road, Anopolis is a charming village perched at an altitude of 205m This strategic location offers stunning views of the city and the beaches to the southeast The village is situated in a lowland area, encompassing 4600 acres of fertile land where agriculture reigns supreme The locals are primarily engaged in farming, cultivating vines, olives, vegetables, and raising livestock.
According to historical records, Anopolis was first mentioned in a contract dating back to 1271, where it was referred to as “Anopoli” In 1577, it was documented as part of the province of Pediados by Fr Barozzi Today, Anopolis remains a traditional village, preserving its authentic Cretan character amidst the continuous development of tourism Wandering through its cobblestone streets, adorned with colorful flowers and old abandoned houses, one can truly experience the essence of a traditional Cretan village The central square is home to the beautiful church of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) and a monument honoring the village’s freedom fighters Here, visitors can unwind and indulge in delicious Cretan dishes and coffee at the village’s quaint cafes.
