Agia Anastasia Galipe

20 km southeast of Heraklion, between the villages of Galipe and Kainourgio Chorio and inside the gorge of Agia Anastasia, is located the homonymous cavernous church.

The impressive white church which is built inside a cave is surrounded by a forest of pine and cypress trees, while its inside space is enough capacious. According to one of the traditions about this church, the Saint’s holy idol was found in the cave by a shepherd’s goat, although it was moved to the village, every night it was returning to the cave. This was interpreted as a message from Saint Anastasia who wanted a church to be built in the cave.
