Description

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Rethymno, also known locally as Megali Panagia (Great Holy Virgin), is the main Orthodox cathedral of Rethymno dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary (Eisodia tis Theotokou). The original church on this site was built in 1844 and completed in 1856, but was later destroyed during World War II. The current building maintains the architectural style and sanctuary traditions of the old church and houses important religious icons, including a 15th-century icon of the Virgin of the Passion. It stands in the heart of the Old Town and remains an active place of worship for the local Orthodox community.
