Description
Kara Musa Pasha Mosque (Τζαμί Καρά Μουσά Πασά) is a former Ottoman mosque in the heart of Rethymno Old Town. Built in the 17th century on the site of the Venetian St Barbara Monastery after the Ottoman conquest of the city, it was named for Kara Musa Pasha, the Turkish naval commander who led the capture of Rethymno in 1646.
Today the building’s exterior can be admired for its blend of Venetian and Ottoman architectural elements — including a small domed fountain at the entrance and surviving remains of the minaret — though the interior is generally closed to the public and used as an archaeological conservation workshop.
