Description
St. Paraskevi Church is the oldest church in the village of Vouvas, located in the Sfakia region of Crete. It stands on the main street of the village and dates back several centuries. The church was once decorated with exceptional frescoes, of which only small fragments survive today. What makes it especially unique is that it is the only church in Sfakia featuring frescoes depicting sinners being punished in hell, a rare and striking theme in local religious art. Above the entrance, five painted panels once formed a cross shape, though these no longer survive.
