The Maritime Museum of Crete was founded in 1973 and is housed within the historic Firka Fortress at the entrance to Chania’s Venetian harbor. It is one of Greece’s premier maritime museums, showcasing over 2,500 items spanning from the Bronze Age to the modern era. Exhibits include detailed ship models, nautical instruments, paintings, historical photographs, relics, and memorabilia illustrating naval history and Greece’s rich seafaring traditions. Highlights include documentation of the Union of Crete with Greece (1913) and displays related to the Battle of Crete (WWII).
