Description

The Potamon Dam sits in the Amari Municipality of Rethymno, at the end of the scenic Patsos Gorge, tucked into a lush green valley. This artificial lake has become one of the most important wetlands in the southeastern Mediterranean. It lies about 25 km from Rethymno city and 95 km from Heraklion, making it an accessible destination from major island points.

Completed in 2009, the dam has played a crucial role in the region’s water supply and irrigation, with plans for future hydroelectric energy production. It gained particular fame in 2014 when a crocodile named “Sifis” was discovered, becoming a local attraction before passing away in 2015. The dam continues to offer impressive landscapes for nature lovers and tourists drawn by its beauty and history.
