Description
The Aposelemis River is one of the most important rivers in Crete, located in the Heraklion regional unit and flowing through the Municipality of Hersonissos. Originating from the Lassithi Plateau, the river travels through the striking Aposelemis Gorge before emptying into the Cretan Sea near Analipsi.
This river plays a key ecological and economic role on the island. It supports a diverse range of plant and animal life, and it supplies water to major cities through the Aposelemis Dam, the largest water reservoir in Crete. The area around the river—especially the gorge and the now-submerged village of Sfendili—is also a destination for hikers and nature lovers.
Its combination of natural beauty, biodiversity, and infrastructural importance makes the Aposelemis River a vital and fascinating feature of Crete’s landscape.
