Description

The Gazanos River, also known locally as Gazanós Potamós, is a seasonal stream flowing through the Malevizi–Gazi region, just west of Heraklion on the northern coast of Crete. Its source lies in the eastern slopes of the Psiloritis massif, gathering tributaries near Asites, joining the Kroussonas stream at Sarchos, then downstream absorbing flow from the Goniano gorge, before emptying into the sea at Ammoudara Beach, close to where the Almiros River also reaches the coast.

The river is known to carry water year-round, although flow can be intermittent with periods of dryness or low discharge (~39% dry periods annually)  . Unfortunately, like several urban streams in the region, it also suffers from pollution, especially near its estuary—which has prompted local concerns and cleanup efforts
