Description
The Almiros River (Greek: Αλμυρός Ποταμός) is a unique, short river located just west of Heraklion, in central Crete, Greece. It's known for its brackish water, originating from a powerful karst spring, which mixes freshwater from the Psiloritis mountains with salty groundwater. Despite its short length (about 2 km), the river plays an important ecological role, creating lush wetlands and supporting rare flora and fauna before flowing into the sea near Ammoudara Beach.
It’s also a popular spot for walks, photography, and birdwatching, and is easily accessible from Heraklion.
