Description
Ligaria is a traditional Cretan village nestled in the mountainous interior. Its precise founding date is unknown, but its origins likely trace back to the post-Byzantine or Venetian era, evidenced by the architecture of its older buildings. Characterized by tightly clustered, whitewashed houses built of local stone, Ligaria showcases vernacular Cretan architecture. Many structures feature characteristic features such as pitched tile roofs and small, windowed doorways. The village's layout reflects its historical agricultural role, with a central square and narrow, winding streets leading to surrounding fields and olive groves. Though its original purpose was primarily agricultural, Ligaria retains its traditional character and continues to serve as a residential community, a testament to Cretan rural life.
