Description

Odigìtria Monastery, founded in the 14th century, is one of Crete’s oldest and most historically significant monasteries. Located at 250 meters above sea level in the Asterousia Mountains, it was a center for monastic life and resistance during Ottoman rule. The monastery was built in fortress-style architecture, with part of its defensive walls still standing today.

The main church is two-aisled, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and Apostles Peter and Paul. It once had a third aisle dedicated to Saint Fanourios, but it was demolished. The monastery houses four icons painted by Angelos.

Visitors can explore the Ksopateras Tower, linked to the legendary monk Ioannis Markakis, who led resistance efforts against the Ottomans in the 19th century. Other highlights include an olive press, wine cellar, cheese storage, guesthouse, and library.
