Description
Georgioupoli Wetlands form a coastal ecosystem where the Almyros River meets the sea, creating a mix of freshwater, brackish pools, and reed beds. This variety of habitats supports a wide range of birdlife, especially migratory species such as herons, egrets, and kingfishers that rely on the area for feeding and resting. The dense reeds and wet vegetation also provide shelter for amphibians, insects, and small reptiles. Fish move between river and sea waters, taking advantage of the nutrient-rich estuary environment. Despite being near a popular tourist area, the wetlands remain one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in northern Chania.
