Description
Sfakia Highlands are a rugged, mountainous landscape where steep slopes, rocky outcrops, and high plateaus create diverse habitats for wildlife. The area is covered with hardy Mediterranean vegetation such as phrygana shrubs, herbs, and scattered cypress, all adapted to dry conditions and strong winds. These highlands are important for birds of prey, including vultures and eagles, which use the cliffs for nesting and soaring. Reptiles and small mammals are also common, taking shelter among rocks and low vegetation. The remoteness and low human presence help preserve a relatively undisturbed natural ecosystem.
