Description
The waterfalls in Samaria Gorge are mostly seasonal and small, rather than large permanent falls. They form from snowmelt in the White Mountains and winter rainfall, so they are strongest in late winter and spring.
Along the long canyon, you’ll find short cascades, trickling rock steps, and flowing sections of the riverbed, especially in the upper part of the gorge where the terrain is steeper and more shaded. The most persistent water features tend to be near springs and narrow passages rather than open areas.
In summer, the gorge is usually almost dry, with only occasional pools or damp sections left behind. Overall, Samaria is better known for its dramatic cliffs and narrow “Iron Gates” passage than for large waterfalls.
