Description
The Katholiko Monastery is one of the oldest and most atmospheric monastic ruins in Crete, located deep inside the Avlaki Gorge on the Akrotiri Peninsula near Chania. It dates back to the 11th century and is considered the oldest monastery in Crete.
Unlike Gouverneto Monastery, Katholiko is no longer inhabited and lies in a dramatic natural setting surrounded by cliffs, caves, and a dry riverbed. The site includes ancient stone buildings, a bridge, and a cave monastery carved into the rock.
Reaching Katholiko requires a hike from Gouverneto Monastery, making it a popular destination for travelers who enjoy nature, adventure, and historical ruins combined in one experience.
