Description
Nestled in the picturesque Apokoronas region of Crete, lies the charming village of Kalyves. With its rich history and idyllic location, it is no wonder that Kalyves has become a popular tourist destination while still maintaining its traditional Cretan character. Some say the village got its name from the makeshift huts built by Arab pirates who invaded in 828 AD, while others believe it comes from the summer huts farmers built near their estates.
The village is situated 19 km east of Chania and is easily accessible by the highway which connects all four prefectures of Crete Kalyves, along with the neighboring resorts of Almyrida and Plaka, are located on the beautiful Cape Drapanos and are known for their sandy beaches. The surrounding Apokoronas region is known for its lush greenery and stunning landscape, including hills, mountains, beaches and traditional architecture.
As an amphitheater-style village, Kalyves boasts a stunning coastline and is a popular spot for fishing, kayaking, windsurfing, and hiking. The village is divided by the river Xydas, which adds to its natural charm with its trees, ducks, and wetland scenery. The presence of the Xydas and Kyliaris rivers also contributes to the village’s fertile valley, surrounded by olive trees and providing a mild climate during the summer months.
