Description
The Kollita Gorges (or Moundros Gorges) are a stunning pair of parallel canyons located near the village of Argyroupoli in the Rethymno regional unit of Crete. This natural complex consists of two main branches—the Moundros Gorge and the Vilasendrou Gorge—which run side-by-side and eventually meet, creating a unique "twin" geological formation. The area is celebrated for its lush Mediterranean vegetation, featuring plane trees, oaks, and rare wild herbs, as well as its impressive limestone cliffs that tower over the trekking paths. Hikers often enjoy the relatively easy, shaded routes that connect the traditional stone-built villages of Moundros and Vilandredo, making it a favorite spot for those seeking a serene, less-crowded alternative to Crete's more famous gorges.
