Paleokastro Hill

Paleokastro Hill (also known as the Hill of Paleokastro) is a prominent coastal landmark in Rethymno, Crete, serving as the foundation for the city's historic Venetian Fortezza. In the 16th century, the Venetians chose this elevated site to build a massive fortress to protect the population from pirate raids and Ottoman attacks. Throughout history, the hill has transitioned from a strategic military stronghold to a residential area under Ottoman rule, and it even served as a prison for resistance fighters during World War II. Today, it is one of Rethymno's most significant archaeological sites, offering visitors unobstructed panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the Old Town.
