Description

It is a small but distinctive museum dedicated to the work of local self-taught sculptor George Koutantos, featuring a permanent collection of over 100 handmade wooden sculptures. Opened in 2010, the museum also functions as a working studio, allowing visitors to see how the artworks are created.

The sculptures are carved entirely by hand using simple tools like a hammer and chisel, often from wood collected across Crete, especially from dead or naturally fallen trees.

The collection focuses strongly on Cretan culture and identity, with themes including:

  • Traditional rural life and customs
  • Folklore and mythology
  • Religious scenes
  • Nature and wildlife
  • Social and family life

Many pieces are life-sized or even larger, making the exhibition visually striking and immersive.
